GUWAHATI: The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) has asked Amalgamated Plantations Pvt. Ltd — the enterprise carved out of the erstwhile Tata Tea Ltd — to immediately relocate all its administrative offices to Assam and recruit only “indigenous people of Assam” from now on, failing which it has threatened to close down its gardens in the state.
The Amalgamated Plantations has multiple stakeholders, including IFC, a part of the World Bank Group, and the Tata Group has its head office at 1 Bishop Lefroy Road, Kolkata, and a corporate office in Guwahati.
The outfit in a statement said, “You have heavy responsibilities to the land and her people where you operate your business at, and in respect of this, it is Western East South Asia region, especially Assam.”
“You have your company’s head office outside Assam where no indigenous personnel from Assam is in employment. The liaison office also not in Assam,” the outfit added. The outfit pointed out to the company that it was recruiting workers from outside Assam instead of unemployed indigenous youth of the state.
